Betsey is a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Giles) Hayward of Mendon, Worcester, MA. She married John, the third of nine children born to Hezekiah and Elizabeth (Avery) Sprague. They married on June 13, 1785 in Templeton, Worcester, Mass. They were a farming family and John was a Tanner by trade.

They had seven children together, they are:
