Of Stockton, CA at the time of his death. He had only recently come to Hawthorne to look for work, which he found at the Naval Ammunition Depot. He and a friend, Walt Webb had come here together and both were to start work at the Naval Ammunition Depot on Tuesday morning (July 25th). They and a few other people were having a beach party at the newly opened Fisherman's Point, on the south-west side of Walker Lake. Dolen swam after some inner tubes, which the wind carried from the shore. It is estimated that Dolen was about 100 yards off shore when he turned and called "help me Walt" and disappeared under the water. Some members of the party went into Hawthorne for additional help along with Marines stationed near by. The search went on for several days. This was the first drowning at Walker Lake in two years.

He married Dorothy Verlyne Nichol on 7 Jul 1947 and had two daughters from that union.
