A son of William and Elizabeth Grubb, known as Smith, he was a farmer in Neersville, Virginia. In 1868, Smith married Eliza Sturdy of Virginia. They had six children.

In 1876, Smith was charged with "making loud, improper, profane and indecent noises….before, during and after the performance of public worship" at the Ebenezer Methodist Church. Found guilty, he was fined one cent!

Smith moved his family to Mechanicsburg, Illinois.
