John enlisted as a Private in Company C of White's Rebels and was wounded and captured by Union forces at Brandy Station on June 9, 1863 after his horse was killed. Paroled at Old Capitol Prison 16 days later, he rejoined his company and died in action at Waterford, the same day as his cousin Richard B. Grubb.
