James Avery, Aurora, Ledyard official, dies
James Avery, 89, husband of Pearl Barnes Avery of Main Street, Aurora, died Tuesday evening in The Auburn Nursing Home after a long illness. Mr. Avery was a lifelong resident of Aurora.
He was a graduate of Cornell University, her served as Post-master of Aurora from 1921-1933, he served as the Town of Ledyard Supervisor for many years; he operated the Aurora Coffee Shop and the Aurora Jam Kitchen from 1933 to 1941. Mr. Avery was also an elder of the Aurora Presbyterian Church.
Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons, James Jr., of Aurora, Randall S.Avery of Miami, Fla., and Alan W. Avery of Union Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Sam H. Ayers of Aurora and Mrs. James R. Shepard of Pelham Manor.
Two brothers, William Byron Avery of Aurora and Francis B. Avery of Fredricksburg, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Gould of Richmond, Va.; Mrs. Cornelia A. Ward of Aurora and Mrs. Anne A. Carpenter of Eutawville, Va.; 18 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral serves will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Aurora Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard F. Kuenkler officiating. Burial will be in Oak Glen Cemetery, Aurora.
Friends may call at the Shakelton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 tonight and Thursday.
Friends wishing may contribute to the Aurora Presbyterian Church Memorial fund in memory of Mr. Avery.
