Born in Stratford, Conn. May 2, 177
For 52 years from 1801 an itinerant
Minister of the Methodist EpiscopaI Church,
Founder of its periodical literature, its first editor, its first missionary secretary, and its historian.
A man honest, generous brave.
Husband and father loving, tender, faithful.
A minister of Christ self-sacrificing, devoted, useful.
A preacher earnest, powerful, acceptable.
An author laborious, copious, yet luminous.
Above all things,
A Christian in whom perfect love had cast out all fear.
In his singularly symmetrical and complete life,
A youth of struggle, anxiety, and self-discipline was followed by
A manhood of unparalleled activity, vigor, and success,
Crowned by an old age of sanctity, honor, and peace,
Ended by a happy and triumphant death, in New York, May 3, 1862.

Here lie also the remains of Mary Bolton, his faithful wife
And the mother of his children, who in grateful memory of her tender affection, rise up and call her blessed.
Born at Edwardsburch C. E. Dec. 2, 1787
Died after long continued sickness and suffering in New York May 23, 1864.
For our light affliction worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.
