Levina Baker Hill
• 23 Sep 1863, Illinois - 24 Mar 1922, Santa Cruz, California.
.
Levina Baker Hill, the daughter of Edwin S. and Virginia Baker, grew up in Tuscola Township, Illinois. After her family moved to Cherryvale, Kansas, in the early 1880s, she attended the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (1883-1885) and the PAFA (1885). Not long after, she moved to California, where she spent most of her remaining years. She appeared under her maiden name in the Oakland directories in 1892, 1893, 1894, and 1901, always as an artist. In 1904 she was listed for the first time as "Mrs. E.R. Hill, artist" (wife of Edward Hill, also a painter and the oldest son of famed California artist Thomas Hill). Later, following her husband's death in 1908, she continued to reside in Oakland, still active as an artist, until 1914. Afterward, she taught in Vacaville and then Boulder Creek while living in Ben Lomond. In 1921 she married Warner O. Porter, a Boulder Creek farmer.
.
Hill exhibited "Horse Head;"The Orange Girl;" and "Cow's Head" at the Mechanics Institute Fair, San Francisco (1889), and "Lilacs" (1893) and "Under the Oaks" and "Portrait" (1894) at shows of the SFAA. Important to her standing as a painter of western subjects, however, are such extant titles as "Indian Child with Spindle Whorl;" "Indian Papoose;" "Yosemite;" "Squaw with Papoose;" "Squaw Making Basket;" "Indian Girl with Doll;" and "On the Trail," depicting two miners camping. She also did canvases of holdups in Yosemite, which were frequent occurrences in those days.
.
Hill is represented in the collections of the San Mateo Historical Society Museum, CA; Society of California Pioneers, San Francisco; and Athenian Nile Club, Oakland.
