Jacob Alterman born 1769 probably in Germany, came to Philadelphia, PA Jan. 10, 1789 aboard the 'Patsey Rutledge' from Hamburg, Germany. Jacob and wife Rosey were married in Rowan Co NC on 22 August of 1796.

The name had various spellings "Olterman" and "Alterman" and others were used in my Virginia family thru 1900. It is now commonly called Alderman.

We know that Jacob and Rosey lived in a Moravian settlement in NC before moving to Grayson Co VA near the NC border. Jacob was apprenticed in the trade of blacksmithing while living in the Moravian settlement of Bethabara in NC. Jacob and Rosey lost a child there in 1797. This son was five days old. He is buried in lot No.47 in Dobbs Parish graveyard, made for the non-Moravian settlers.

Jacob and Rosey settled in Grayson County, Virginia and raised a good sized family. Among their children were John, Jacob, Philip, George, Elizabeth, Frederick and Henry.

note: page 534, " Names of Foreigners Who Took the Oath of Allegiance to the Province and State of Pennsylvania, 1727-1775" states, List of GERMAN passengers on board the ship Patsey Rutledge, Jacob Alterman.
