Author, Musician. He received his postgraduate degree from Amherst College in 1881. After completing his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and as a Bach Scholar under the direction of Philipp Spitta in Berlin, Germany, he lectured at the University of Berlin for three years. In 1893, Dickinson came to the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and began teaching classes in music history and appreciation. As there were no standard texts available for use in the classroom, he authored ‘The Education of a Music Lover', ‘Music and Higher Education' and ‘The Spirit of Music' for this purpose. These works were considered to be the best in the field into the first half of the twentieth century. Dickinson's ‘Music in the History of the Western Church' has been recognized by many as the definitive volume for the study of the origin and advances in church music and culture.
