George was a 7th-generation descendant of early New England settler John Fairfield of Wenham, Mass. His parents were David and Hannah (Thurber) Fairfield of Woodstock, CT. In 1851, George and his nephew, Charles Fairfield, sailed together from New York to California on the ship Roscoe. At first, he settled in Tuolomne County and is recorded as the carpenter of the new Methodist Church. Later, he was a proprietor of Crowell & Fairfield in remote Crescent City. In 1870, he can be found in Eureka, where his nephew Charles was a racetrack and saloon keeper, and his other nephew, David Fairfield (my gg-grandfather), was a railroad conductor (& later sheriff there). By 1880, George had moved to Salinas, where "he lived for many years." He was unmarried and had no children. The lot was purchased by H.S. Ball, and there is a tall white granite monument with a granite base.
