Capt. Smoot was the son of Edward Smoot, "Gentleman." John was a Captain, 3rd Co., Dorchester Militia. He became very wealthy with a mercantile business and his own fleet of ships, some of which, were lost during the war. He built the beautiful "Liberty Hall" plantation in Dorchester Co., overlooking the Nanticoke River, which is still standing. He was the father of four children.
