James Scott, age 9 years, was enumerated October 21, 1850, at Jennings, Crawford County, Indiana, with Ferdinand Scott 33 and a Farmer, Eleanor, née Batman, Scott 34, Sarah Scott 11, Henry Scott 7, Anagin Scott 5, Milton Scott 3 and Mary Scott, who was recently born. James Scott, age 17 years, was enumerated July 23, 1860, at Pettis, Adair County, Missouri, with Ferdinand Scott 42 and a Farmer, Ellen Scott 43, Sarah Scott 19, Henry M. Scott 15, Edward H. Scott 13, Milton Scott 11, Mary E. Scott 9, Wilson Scott 7, Malila Scott 4 and John F. Scott 1.

James Scott signed the Military Oath as a Private in the First Artillery of the Marmaton Home Guard, Marmaton, Bourbon County, Kansas, May 25, 1861, under the command of Captain Orlando Durkee.

James Scott, whose residence was Fort Scott, Kansas, and whose occupation was a Farmer, was enlisted by Harris S. Greeno April 1 and was mustered into Co. L, 6th Kansas Cavalry, at Fort Scott May 14, 1863. Norman T. Winans, Assistant Surgeon, 9th Kansas Cavalry, was the Examining Surgeon who determined that Recruit Scott was “free from all bodily defects and mental infirmity, which would in any way, disqualify him from performing the duties of a soldier.” Private Scott was mustered out at DeValls Bluff, Arkansas, July 18, 1865.

James Scott filed from New Mexico for a Civil War veteran's pension November 17, 1896 and received application No. 1,182,987 and certificate No. 977,711.

James Scott, age 58 years and a Farmer, was enumerated June 29, 1900, at Aztec, San Juan County, New Mexico Territory, with Mary J. Scott 48, Arthur C. Scott 22 and a Farmer and James Ferdinand Scott 10.
