On July 26, 2003, she sustained massive head injuries at her hotel room in Vilnius, Lithuania, after a severe beating by her boyfriend, Bertrand Cantat, lead singer of the French rock group, 'Noir Desir.' After the police arrived, she was taken to the hospital, along with Cantat who was treated for alcohol poisoning, a suspected overdose, and what appeared to be cuts and bruises on his hands. The actress underwent two operations to relieve the pressure on her brain, but after little success she was sent home to a hospital in Neuilly-Sur-Seine, France. Trintignant remained in a coma and on August 1, 2003, she passed away. Among those who sent out condolences to her family was French President Jacques Chirac.
