George Donnelly was born in 1886 in Brechin, Ontario, one of
nine children born to John and Mathilda Donnelly. There were also two
half-brothers, Pat and Mike. Of the family, four came West; John and
three sons, Pat and Jerome to Rimbey, and George who settled west of
Bluffton. John died in 1914. In 1911 George homesteaded the NW 34-
43-3-5. In 1915 he married Elizabeth (Eliza) VanHumbeck who had
come from Wolverthem, Belguim two years earlier at the age of
eighteen.

On April 15, the day of their wedding, farmers were already
seeding wheat.

They lived on the farm west of Bluffton until 1947, when they
moved into town to retire. George died two years later. Eliza moved
back to the farm and lived with Gilbert for a few years until ill health
forced her to live with Leona in Red Deer. She died in 1960. George "was
deeply involved in Hog Pool affairs and was an ardent worker in the
community. During the hard times he made many coffins for the poor
of the district, charging only the cost of the material.
George and Eliza had eight children, the eldest son Francis
died at the age of three. Nelson married Marion Fowler and lives on the
old VanHumbeck farm; they have seven children. Joe served overseas
in the R.C.A.S.C. and while in Birmingham married Margaret Keeney
of County Donegal, Ireland; they have six children. David also served
in the R.C.A.S.C., mainly in Italy. He married Louise Edwards of
Edmonton and had three children. Louise died in 1969. Dave lives in
Drayton Valley. Marie got her High School education at St. Joseph's
Convent in Red Deer, then her teaching certificate in Edmonton,
taught for three years, then married Dick Olson of Rimbey, who was
then serving in the Royal Canadian Engineers in Prince George. They
have fourteen children. Gilbert married Audrey White, a nurse from
the Carlos district and they lived on the home place for about seven
years before moving to Nanaimo, B.C. in 1967. They have four
children. Fidelas worked in the C. A.D.P. creamery in Bluffton and Red
Deer before moving to Vancouver where she married Tom Rainey. She
has four children. Leona married Jim Masson of Lethbridge, who
worked in the Bank of Montreal for some time. They now live in Red
Deer where Jim is Secretary-Treasurer of the County. They have six
children.
