Lavinia "Vinie" Leechman was born in Georgia and at about age 18 married Nathan Thomas Barnett, son of Oglethorpe County plantation owner Benjamin Harrison Barnett. The couple had three children: Benjamin Harrison Barnett (named for his grandfather), Stella Irene Barnett Meyer, and Marcus Nathan Barnett. Vinie was only 24 when her husband died in September of 1885, and she never remarried. She and the children moved into the plantation house. Upon the death of her mother-in-law, Vinie became lady of the house, and she remained in that role until her death in 1944.
