Professional Photographer. He is remembered as an acclaimed French photographer, who was one of the most important photographers of the 20th century, archiving 450,000 photographs in his special system for research. His photographs mainly captured the streets of Paris during the 1930s on black-and-white film. After he began photographing as a teenager, he was educated at the École Estienne, graduating in 1929 with diplomas in engraving and lithography. He is remembered for his photograph "Baiser de l'Hôtel de Ville," a 1950 photograph of a couple kissing on a busy Parisian street. Other works are "Les Petits Enfants au Lait," "Les Pains de Picasso," "L'Accordeoniste, Rue Mouffetard" and "Le Cheval Tombe." During World War II, he was drafted into the French army as both a soldier and photographer until 1940. From then until the end of the war in 1945, he used his photographer's skills along with lettering artistry and engraving skills to forge passports and identification papers for the French Resistance. After the war, he was hired in 1948 by "Vogue" magazine as a fashion photographer. Later, he was a freelance photographer, selling his works to "Life" and other international magazines. Among the many awards and honors, he was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1984 by then French President, François Mitterrand.
