John Halling is a son of Jorgen Pedersen (John Petersen) Halling and Maren Ludvigsen (Larsen), both Danish immigrants. He is their third child and only son having three sisters: Anne Margrethe, Christine Mary, and Elizabeth. John spent his childhood in Brigham City and attended school there.
He heard there was work in Idaho so he came to Bonanza Bar which is located about fifteen miles west of American Falls, Idaho on the Snake River. He he worked for a mining company which was mining gold out of the river.
He returned to Utah and went to Murray in search of work staying at the home of his sister, Mary. It was here that he met Effie Josephine Hansen. John and Effie married on August 17, 1898 in Logan, Utah. They became parents to seven children: Effie Fern, John Lionel, Owen Willis, Averl, Russell Miles, Phyllis Josephine, and Jean Lorraine.
The family lived in Cache Valley for a time before moving to Rockland, Idaho. John was a dryland wheat farmer and later in his life he was a foreman on a road contract.
