FRANK LUKE OF TAX BOARD DIES
Had Been in Arizona For 75 Years, 40 Years in Public Service
GRAND CANYON. June 18. (JP) Frank Luke, Sr., 80, member of the Arizona tax commission for more than 18 years and father of the famed World war hero of the same name, died of an acute , heart attack in a hotel room here today. Mr. and Mrs. Luke drove to Grand Canyon yesterday with Mr. and Mrs. P. P. Pendergrass of Phoenix. Pendergrass is a field agent for the Arizona state temperance enforcement division. Shortly before midnight, Luke complained to his wife of being ill. When his condition became steadily worse, she summoned Dr. B. G. Carson. Despite the efforts of Dr. Carson, Luke died at 12:25 a. m.
Altitude Blamed
Dr. Carson said that Luke, who had been in failing health for several years, probably was affected by the higher altitude. Luke's death ended a 75-year residence in Arizona, 40 years of which were spent in public service. He has been successively Phoenix city assessor, member of the Maricopa county board of supervisors, Maricopa county appraiser for the federal land bank and tax commissioner. Governor Jones, just returned from the Arizona day celebration at San Francisco, expressed deep regret at Luke's death, and said he would be accorded, "all proper honors." The body, brought to Phoenix tonight, will lie in state in the rotunda of the capitol, probably tomorrow, the governor indicated. Funeral services have been set tentatively for 9 a. m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic church.
Born in Prussia
Luke was born in Dahlhausan, Prussia, and came to Arizona as a child of five. On reaching manhood, he engaged in mining and merchandising activities in and near Prescott, finally coming to the Salt River valley in 1880. Of nine children born to the Lukes, all except Frank Luke, Jr., the Phoenix soldier who won the sobriquet "Balloon buster of Arizona" during the World War, are living. A statue of Frank Luke, Jr., stands at the approach to the state capitol. . Survivors include the widow, Tillie, the four sons, Edwin, John, Charles and William, all of Phoenix, and four daughters, Mrs. Thomas A. Flynn. Phoenix, Mrs. John Sherry Berkeley, Calif.: Mrs. E. P. Perry, Phoenix, and Mrs. E. B. Wilson, Wickenburg, and 24 grandchildren.
