PORTSMOUTH - Flossie L. Banks, 84, of the 2700 block of High St., passed away Friday Sept. 2, 2011. She was born Sept. 3, 1926 in Portsmouth to the late Lloyd and Sallie Lewis. She retired from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital after 30 years of service. She also retired from the Portsmouth public school system. She was a member of New First Baptist Church Taylorsville. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Portsmouth Senior Station. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Wilbert Lewis, Charles Lewis and Richard Lewis; and her sisters, Helen Ruffin and Lucy Gray. She is survived by her long term friend, Mr. Joseph Wiggins; her daughter, Anita Peele; her son, Milton Banks Jr.; grandson, Tavaris Peele (Tonya); granddaughter, Jeneane Peele; great-grandchildren, Terra Perryman and Jeremiah Morse; and great-great-grandchildren, Malachi and My'Kira; a loving and caring niece, Renee' Jones; a brother, Vernon Lewis; two sisters, Laura Freeman and Ida Jordan; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her second family, Willie Mae Canty and the entire Canty clan. A viewing will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Graves Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 10, at New First Baptist Church Taylorsville by the Rev. James Woods. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Chesapeake. Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church St., Norfolk, will be handling the arrangements.
