Rev. William James was the son of John M. James b. 1775 in VA, and Mary Polly Poor b. about 1790. He had the following brothers and sisters: Mary, John R., Elizabeth, Robert Sallee, Nancy Gardner, Thomas Martin, and Drury Woodson James.

He married Mary Ann Varble b. about 1812, on 2 Dec 1843; they had the following children: Julia, Thomas, William, Mary, Laura, George, Alice, Luther, and Gustavus James.

He was the brother of Robert Sallee James and uncle of the famous outlaws "Jesse James" and "Frank James."

He was the son of John R and Mary Polly Poor James. One of his brothers was Robert Sallee James, father of Jesse James. He married twice, first to Mary Ann Varble, with whom he had at least nine children. After her death, he married a widow, Mary Ann (Gibson) Marsh, 24 Apr 1865, and had no children from this relationship. He was an ordained Methodist minister. It is said that he reluctantly officiated the marriage of his nephew, Jesse James, and niece, Zerelda Mimms. In the 1880 census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO, he was residing in the household of George and Mary (his daughter) Kirkpatrick, and listed as George's father-in-law. He was residing with them at the time of his death. An interview appeared in the Kansas City Journal, 6 Apr 1882, and his obit was listed in the Kansas City Star...both of which gave considerable data about him and his family.
