Navy Cross Citation:

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Sergeant Frank A. Barnhart (MCSN: 85137), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Headquarters Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Somme-Py, France, 4 October 1918. Sergeant Barnhart left his trench several times and helped to carry wounded soldiers from the field through machine-gun and artillery fire.
