In the 1870 Census (Jersey Co., Otter Creek), he is listed with the James Yale family as Ernst Young, age 30, from Prussia, working as a cooper (barrel maker).

Ernest Young married Amelia Giers on December 4, 1870, in Jersey County, Illinois.

Ernest apparently died before 1880, as the 1880 Census (Jersey Co., Fidelity) lists Amelia Young, age 26, and daughter, Mary, age 2, keeping house for Lewis and Mary Bauer. Also living is the house is Amelia's brother, Lewis Giers, age 13.
