Emily Reese Smith, 86, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 9, 2011.

She was born on April 1, 1925, in Courtland, Virginia, to Gertrude Manry Reese and George Walter Reese. Emily attended Mary Baldwin College and the Richmond Professional Institute of William and Mary College, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science.

She will live on in the hearts of her husband, Charles H. Smith Jr. and their four children, Tarina Esclapez and husband, Bernard, of Keswick, Virginia, Suzanne Smith of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Charles H. Smith III and wife, Ginny, of Charlottesville, Virginia, Betty Hesaltine and husband, Scott, of Richmond, Virginia; six grandchildren, Christopher and Olesya Esclapez of Paris, France, Allison Esclapez and Carl Stacy of Charlottesville, Virginia, Charles M. "Chas" and Lara Smith of Staunton, Virginia, Emily Hesaltine and Matthew Walker of Arlington, Virginia, Tarina Hesaltine of New York City, and Julie Hesaltine of Richmond, Virginia; four great-grandchildren, Anna, Leah, Zakhar, and Luke.

Emily was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother, Dr. George Walter Reese Jr. and two grandchildren, Loren Smith and Michael Smith.

Just after World War ll, while a social worker for the City of Richmond, her future father-in-law introduced her to Charles H. Smith Jr., her husband of 63 years. Upon their move to Charlottesville, she was employed by the local Department of Welfare before becoming a mother, her favorite job.

An active volunteer, she was President of the University of Virginia Medical Center Auxiliary from 1977 until 1979. She was influential in bringing Hospice service to the area and in establishing the Hospitality House for the visiting families of patients. For over 60 years, she and her husband have been avid supporters and donors of University of Virginia Sports. Emily was a member of the Miller Center Presidential Cabinet, the Monticello Presidential Cabinet, former member of the UDC, a former Board Member of what is now the Charlottesville Symphony Society, and a Life Member of the Jamestowne Society.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, reading books, and traveling with her husband. Beginning with tent camping at Cape Hatteras, followed later by RV, their adventures included visiting all 50 states, the Canadian Provinces, and 20+ other countries. They often traveled with friends Olga and Charles Herbek, and other local friends known as the Potluck Group.

She will be remembered for her compassion for others, her devotion to her family, twinkling blue eyes, gorgeous smile, youthful attitude, and warm heart.

The family expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Kevin McConnell and Dawn Fisher RN, for their exceptional and devoted level of care during these last years. They also thanked Dr. Andrew Wolf and Dr. Mary Bryant.

A memorial service was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Sunday, October 16, 2011.
