"The Duke Memorial Chapel is closed to tourists and separated from the rest of the Chapel by large iron gates. Along the left wall, the University's benefactors—Washington Duke and his two sons, James B. Duke and Benjamin N. Duke—are entombed in three 30-ton, white Carrara marble sarcophagi carved by Charles Keck. Over the altar are three limewood figures: Jesus stands in the center, with St. Paul on the left and St. Peter on the right. A boss with the Duke family coat of arms graces the ceiling."

"This is the mausoleum for the family of Washington Duke, the founder of Duke University in Durham. Mary Elizabeth Lyon was Washington Duke's only daughter and it was she who actually pressed for the creation of the university. She is entombed in the mausoleum with her husband Robert E Lyon and other members of the Duke family. It is impossible to photograph the marble wall behind which she is entombed although you can see the engraving when you look through the dark glass of the locked doors. There are many other members of the Lyon family buried in a large plot next to this structure. SEE THE MEMORIAL FOR ROBERT E. LYON (MARY'S HUSBAND) FOR A PHOTO OF THE INSCRIPTION OF MARY AND ROBERT'S NAMES ON THE INTERNAL WALL. Washington Duke himself was moved to the burial chamber in the basement of Duke University Chapel."

NOTE: received this note of correction from Robert C. Peurifoy: "There is an error the description of the photograph of the old Washington Duke Mausoleum. Washington Duke was not the founder of Duke University. Duke University was formerly Trinity College, located in Randolph County, North Carolina. His son James B. Duke was instrumental in relocating the college to Durham where it was renamed Duke University in Honor of Washington Duke. The undergraduate school is still known as Trinity College.
Note: Washington Duke is no longer buried here.
