George Francis Chase was born August 23, 1841 in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Josephus Palmer Chase and Irena Laurence Harmon. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. His father Josephus died in 1861 in Victor, Colorado while mining for gold. After the war was over George married Mary Ann Burr of Illinois. They were the parents of 13 children, the first 12 born in Kansas. Their 13th child, Chester Harmon Chase was born in Oroville, California, on January 1, 1890. George died May 17, 1911; he and his wife Mary Ann are buried together in Old Oroville Cemetery.

BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS.

The board proceeded to canvass the votes polled at the township elections held April 1, 1873, and declared the following persons elected to the offices named in the returns of elections:

Jackson Township. - Justices of the peace, George F. Chase, Robert Berry.

Former Abilene Man Dead.

Frank Chase of this city received a telegram last evening stating that his brother, Geo. F. Chase aged 69 years, died of heart failure at his home in Oroville, Cal., yesterday. The burial will take place in California. The deceased formerly lived eight miles northwest of this city.

Frank Chase, J. H. Chase, Mrs. Madora Houtz, all of this city and Mrs. Ellen Hobbs of Solomon, brothers and sisters of the deceased, survive him.

Mr. Chase came to Kansas in 1857. He was an old soldier and joined the 11th Kansas at Ft. Riley in 1861, where he became sergeant of Company G. The deceased left this county in February, 1883. His many friends remember him as one who was liked by all and they will be sorry to learn of his death.
