Johannes was born in Wiedikon, a suburb of Zurich, Switzerland as the fourth child of Johannes Mathys and Anna Dorothea Meyer. He, his parents, younger brother Johannes Heinrich, and older sister Anna Maria Dorothea joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1854. In 1855 he immigrated to Utah with Casper and Anna Barbara Bryner.

After arriving in the Utah Valley he married his travelling companion, Anna Barbara Bryner in 1856. In this new country he used John for his first name rather than Johannes. The family first settled in Lehi and then moved to St. George, Washington County in 1860. He died there in 1899 at age 67.

He was survived by his wife Barbara, daughters Barbara Ann and Lena Albertina, and son Wallace Brigham.
