DESCENDANT OF THE PATRIOT ISRAEL PUTNAM PASSES AWAY.
The funeral services of Mrs. Rhoda Gowan were conducted by Rev. C. W. Casely, at the homestead of her son, Mr. A. W. Gowan, on Twin Creek, Thursday the 19th instant. Deceased was born in the town of Pike, Allegheny County, New York, and at the time of her death was 72 years of age. Her maiden name was Putnam, and she often spoke with pride of the patriot blood that flowed in her veins—being a great-granddaughter of Israel Putnam. Her health for the last 32 years was very poor, and up to the Friday preceding her death there was no visible change for the worse; but on that day she was taken down, and sunk rapidly, passing peacefully away about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. She was married in 1837 to Nathaniel Gowan, who is at present in Wisconsin, and has lived in Kansas since September, 1872. The thanks of the family are hereby extended to the many friends whose kind service and sympathy tend to lessen the sorrow of the afflicted.

Obit NOTE: The relationship between Rhoda's line and General Israel Putnam isn't direct after all. Our common ancestor is Lt Thomas Putnam (1615-1686), who married twice. Rhoda's line descends from the 1st wife, Ann Holyoke. While General Israel Putnam descends from the 2nd wife, Mary Ingersoll.
