Canadian politician. A native of Sainte-Genevière-de-Berthier (Québec), he studied in Berthier and at the College of L’Assomption. He worked as a farmer in l’Île-Dupas and served as Secretary and President of the School Board of l’Île-Dupas. He served also as Mayor of that town. He was elected as the Liberal representative in the Legislative Assembly for the district of Berthier in 1871. He was re-elected in 1875, but was later defeated twice in a row : first in 1878 and again at the by-election of December 30, 1880. He tried vainly to switch to the House of Commons at the federal elections of 1882, but he was more successful at the provincial elections of 1886. On December 24, 1889, he resigned and two weeks later, he was named to the Legislative Council for the division of Lanaudière, He served in this house from January 10, 1890 until its resignation, on March 23, 1905. He died in in Berthierville. He was the Grandfather of Armand Sylvestre, member of the House of Commons from 1925 to 1930 and from 1935 to 1945.
