Canadian politician. A native of Montréal (Québec), he studied at Sainte-Marie College in Montréal, at Stoneyhurst College in England, then at Laval University in Quebec and McGill University. He was admitted to the bar of the Province of Quebec on June 18, 1867. He was created Queen’s Counsel in law on December 5, 1878. He opened his practice in Trois-Rivières and became Honorary director of British Empire Life Association and President of a printing company in Trois-Rivières. Then he founded and acted as director of the newspaper “La Concorde” in 1879. Five years later, he cofounded another paper : “La Sentinelle”. He served as one of the aldermen of Trois-Rivièreshree-Rivers of 1873 to 1875, then mayor of July 17, 1876 to July 9, 1877. The citizens of the district of Trois-Rivières sent him to the Legislative Assembly as their Independant Conservative representative at the by-election of April 18, 1876. He was re-elected without opposition in 1878. He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from June 4, 1878 to March 8, 1882. At the general elections of 1881, he lost his seat but regained it at the by-election of March 26, 1884. He was re-elected, this time as a Liberal candidate, in 1886. He was named minister without portfolio in the Mercier cabinet on January 29, 1887. He acted briefly as Premier by interim in 1887. He served as Attorney General from May 3, 1888 to August 22, 1890. He was re-elected at the by-election of May 25, 1888, but was defeated in 1890. Then, he was named Protonotary at the Superior Court of Montreal from August 19, 1890 until its death in Montréal.
