Lois Simmons Keeney, 86, of Charlottesville died Monday, October 27, 2008, at Martha Jefferson Hospital, following an injury to her shoulder and a subsequent illness.

Lois Keeney was born September 5, 1922, in Frederick, Maryland, one of four children of the late Richard F. Simmons and Elsie C. Simmons.

She is survived by her sister, Peggy Eckard of Richmond, Virginia; and her brother, Bill Simmons of Frederick, Maryland, and their families. She lost a brother, Richard Simmons Jr., in World War II.

Lois is also survived by one of her three children, a son, Ronald M. Keeney, and his wife, Paula, and their two children, April and Brandon; by her widowed daughter-in-law, Linda B. Keeney of Troy, Virginia; and by her widowed daughter-in-law, Jackie H. Cromwell, of Bumpass, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Dan F. Keeney; and two of her sons, Scott S. Keeney of Troy, Virginia; and Christopher L. Keeney of Casanova, Virginia.

Both Lois and Dan were life-long naturalists, avid birders, and loyal supporters of many wildlife and nature conser-vation groups. From their homes in Falls Church, Virginia, where they raised their children, and later from Great Falls, Virginia, they enjoyed traveling to many unique locales, from skin diving over the reefs of the Caribbean to hot-air ballooning over the plains of Africa.

Lois was an accomplished artist and leaves a legacy of oil paintings cherished by family and friends. Lois had been an amateur horticultural-ist, particularly of orchids. She was a founding member of the local chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (formerly Self-Help for Hard of Hearing, or SHHH). She struggled for many years with her hearing loss and tinnitus, which socially isolated her.

Although Lois loved flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Tinnitus Assoc. (800-634-8978 or www.ata.org), the World Wildlife Fund (202-293-4800 or www.panda.org), or your local SPCA.

The family invites friends to enjoy her paintings and celebrate her life at the Colonnades Senior Living facility in Charlottesville, Virginia, 3 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008.
