Peter Van Ness married Elizabeth Ann Cole on June 8th, 1845. They had five daughters: Mary Hane, Sarah (born 1849, died before 1857), Julia, Sarah Matilda, and Rachel Elizabeth. On May 30th, 1868, Peter was attempting to cross the Hudson River by sailboat and was overcome and drowned.
