She was a member of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church and a devoted mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Gerth was the oldest of seven children born to Edward G. and Lillian Ernst. She attended St. Therese grade school and was a graduate of Atherton High School.
She was a retired transcript clerk for the Jefferson County Board of Education and before that worked for Burke Marketing Research and the Berwyn T. Moore Co.
She volunteered for several years as the first "Cowardly Lion" in the "Wizard of Oz" exhibit at the Louisville Zoo's annual Halloween party.
Known as "RiRi," to her granddaughter and to children in her neighborhood, Mrs. Gerth loved kids and continued playing with them until just months before her death when her health no longer allowed her to do so.
Mrs. Gerth was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Gerth Jr., and is survived by her daughter, Sr. Nancy Jo Gerth, SCN, of Bardstown, KY; her son, Joseph J. Gerth III, his wife, Mary Ann Gerth, and Mrs. Gerth's granddaughter, whom she doted on, Lucy Mei Bridget Gerth, all of Prospect, KY. She is also survived by three brothers, Edward Ernst, Denny Ernst and Freddie Ernst, all of Louisville; and three sisters, JoAnn Givens of Louisville, Pat Andres of Floyds Knobs, IN and Margaret Avarello, of Clermont, FL.
She adored those who cared for her at Nazareth Home.
Her funeral Mass will be at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 760 Eastern Pkwy., 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial at St. Michael Cemetery will follow. Visitation will be at Bosse Funeral Home, 1355 Ellison at Barret avenues, from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
