Vietnam War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Lance Corporal (Machine Gunner) in the United States Marine Corps in Company E, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein) Fleet Marine Force. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on April 11, 1970, near Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam. His family was presented the medal by Vice President Spiro Agnew at the White House. His citation reads in part "Moments later, he located one of the enemy soldiers, hiding among the reeds and brush. As the three Marines attempted to remove the resisting soldier from the pond, L/Cpl. De La Garza observed him pull the pin on a grenade. Shouting a warning, L/Cpl. De La Garza placed himself between the other two Marines and the ensuing blast from the grenade, thereby saving the lives of his comrades at the sacrifice of his life."
