I first found my great grandmother, 11 year-old Elizabeth Carroll, in the 1850 Campbell County census with her parents, George and Mary Carroll. George was born in Ireland c. 1790 and Mary was born in North Carolina c. 1798. Elizabeth's siblings in that census were Elvira age 27, William age 23, Louisa age 17 and Phillip H age 9. Elvira was born in North Carolina and the rest of the children were born in Tennessee. Their neighbors were Peter and Margaret Pierce and their six children, including Elizabeth's future husband, 5 year-old Clinton Pierce.

Elizabeth Carroll was married on October 18, 1858 to William Ellison in Campbell County, TN. According to my family oral history, William died during the Civil War. They are together in the 1860 Claiborne County census with one month old son Francis. I believe Elizabeth changed the name of baby Francis to William in honor of his deceased father. I believe this because William was born on March 31, 1860 and the census was as of July 1. There was only one son enumerated. The son of Elizabeth and William, William Harrison Ellison, was raised by his mother and her second husband, Clinton Pierce.

Soon after Clinton returned home from the Civil War, he and Elizabeth Ellison were married on December 25, 1866 in Campbell County. The 1870 census has the family as Clinton age 24, Elizabeth 31, William 10, Sarah [sic] 2 and James 1. The other children who followed were Thomas, Mary Elizabeth, Preston, George, Hauk. My Grandmother Sallie was the oldest child and only one to leave Campbell County. Clinton and Elizabeth were married almost 29 years at the time of her death. She died of consumption in 1895.

Elizabeth's gravestone is difficult to read, however, her birth and death dates are from the Butler/Pierce family Bible of her daughter, my grandmother, Sallie Pierce Butler.

For years I have been hoping to find a trace of Elizabeth's parents. Something other than the 1850 Campbell County census. Perhaps they left Tennessee and moved to Missouri with their son Harrison or moved somewhere else with one of their daughters. I didn't know. That search is finally over. I just recently found an affidavit in her brother's widow's pension file. A deposition by Dr. John Jones, a doctor who treated her brother William during the last few days of his life stated that he knew William's entire family -- "Geo Carroll, an Irishman, his mother and all the family." Dr. Jones also gave testimony, he gave several affidavits over a period of years, that he did not treat George Carroll as George had died before he began to practice medicine in 1854. Another time Dr. Jones stated that both George and his wife were deceased by 1854. © 2013 Janet on Find A Grave, Memorial 7886487.
