Dr. Elizabeth B. Gillespie, Of Medical Family
Dr. Elizabeth Biermann Gillespie, 74, 2365 Auburn AVe, Mt. Auburn, died Wednesday in Christ Hospital.
Dr. Gillespie was the last physician member of the Gillespie family in Cincinnati, which since the turn of the century contributed four physicians, practicing in the fields of obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics. They included her husband, the late William P. Gillespie, her husband's brother, Thaddeus R. Gillespie and her father in-law, the late William Gillespie.
"Dr. Betty," as she was widely called by her patients, nurses and colleagues, was reared in Bloomington, Indiana, the daughter of an Indiana University professor, and she received her undergraduate and medical degrees in Indiana.
Dr. Gillespie served her internship at the Rovert Long General Hospital and the James Whitcomb Realy Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. With Dr. Verne Hahn, she pioneered research in sickle cell anemia for which she was awarded a cum laude degree. She was recently honored for that early work by the Indiana Medical Alumni Association.
In later years, she was on the staffs of Christ and Bethesda Hospitals in Cincinnati. She was active in the Women's Medical Society of Cincinnati, having served as its president.
Surviving Dr. Gillespie are her daughter Jane Gillespie, a lawyer residing in New York City; three sisters, Mrs. Donal C. Stone, Pittsburgh, Pa; Mrs. Roger Barbour, Oak Park, Ill., and Mrs. Jerome Willman, Palm Springs, Calif, and two brothers, David Biermann, Piqua, Ohio, and Arnold Biermann, Redart, Va.
