Rank:S2cHugh was the oldest child born to Hugh Ivory Jones and Vera Alice McGuire Jones. He was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma. His parents moved from Oklahoma to Los Angeles while he was a small child. His mother died in Los Angeles and his father brought her back to Oklahoma to bury her where they grew up. He lived in Oklahoma until his father re-married, then they moved back to Los Angeles. Hugh attended school in Los Angeles until he enlisted in the Navy. When he was not quite 18 years old he enlisted, his step-mother signed his papers. As soon as he completed boot camp he was placed on the USS Arizona and sent off to war. The USS Arizona was sunk in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, many of its personnell still in their bunks asleep. All that remained of Hugh was his billfold and dog tags which was returned to his father. Hugh Junior loved his family very much. I have two letters that he wrote to my mother from the USS Arizona and it showed his love of family and country. From these letters I have been able to realize that he did not regret the loss of his life defending his homeland. Hugh was awarded the Purple Heart, Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Pacific Theater Medal with one bronze battle star, and the World War II Victory Medal.
