Robert was the son of Gustav Nepper and Matilda Eschmann. On 21 Mar 1901 he married Mary K. "Mayme" Glass and they had four children: William, Julia, Gustav and an unnamed boy who was stillborn. Mayme died in 1915 and Robert never remarried. Early in his life he worked as a tanner and by 1900 he was employed as a stationary fireman. Later in his life he worked as a carpenter. Robert died of chronic myocarditis at the age of 72.
