Robert Russell married Jean Scott Anderson. She was born 04 May 1829 in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland. They had 10 children: William Russell, Thomas Russell, Mary Russell, Robert Russell, John Russell, Sarah Robertson Russell, James Robert Russell, David Russell, Jane Scott Russell, Archibald Gary Russell.

The Herald, Piedmont, West Virginia, May 16, 1902: Thursday last, Mr. Robert Russell, Sr., passed away surrounded by his family. He was aged 72 years. His death though not unexpected was a shock to his friends. He had been a member of the Presbyterian church for 41 years, having been admitted on examination March 3, 1861 and taking an active part in church work until a few years ago. He is survived by four sons and three daughters, all grown and having families. The funeral took place Saturday from the home of his son Archie. Barton Lodge No. 90 I.O.O.F. of which he was a member escorted the body to the grave. The remains were interred in Laurel Hill cemetery, Rev. McMaster officiating Lonaconing Star
