Joseph married Virginia Jane Patterson in St. Patricks Church in Armstrong Co., PA Dec 18 1877. They lived for awhile in Brady's Bend and within ten years had moved to Warren Co., PA. Shortly therafter they lived in North Pine Grove, and by 1895 were residing in Hancock Co., Ohio. From there they moved south into Lima, Allen Co., Ohio buying a house at 431-433 N. McDonel St. in Lima.It is uncertain how much time was actually spent there because Joseph followed the oil fields as a driller to Oklahoma and worked there for a time.

Joseph Black, Sr., also worked as a civil engineer at Allen Acres and at Lima Hospital. He had bright blue eyes and in later years a snow white beard and hair, standing 6 foot tall and lean. He was a member of St Rose Church and Holy Name Society.

In her will signed 3/13/1925 and probated 1/6/1928, Ora Williams Black, widow of William Patrick, Joseph's step-brother, left Joseph the sum of $800.
