5th Marquess of Worcester
9th Earl of Worcester
11th Baron Herbert
Eldest son and heir of Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort, and Lady Rachel Noel. Paternal grandson of Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort and the Honourable Mary Capell. Maternal grandson of Wriothesley Baptist Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough, and the Honourable Catherine Greville.
On 28 June 1729, he married Frances Scudamore, the only daughter and heir of James Scudamore, 3rd Viscount Scudamore and took his wife's name by an Act of Parliament a year later.
They had no children, and in 1742 he filed for divorce, accusing his wife of adultery with William Talbot. The marriage ended in 1744, and Frances was later remarried, to Charles FitzRoy, the illegitimate son of the Duke of Grafton.
Henry died without legitimate issue and his titles were inherited by his younger brother Charles Noel. He did, however, have an illegitimate daughter named Margaret Burr. She became the wife of the painter Thomas Gainsborough.
At the age of 19, Henry commissioned the construction an ornate set of drawers made in Florence. It would later become known as the Badminton Chest. It was sold in 2004 to Hans-Adam II, Prince of Liechtenstein for over $35 million, making it the most expensive piece of furniture in the world.
It is now on display in the Palais Liechtenstein in Vienna.
