John married Caroline Denslow, daughter of John H. & Martha "Patsy" (Shepherd) Denslow, on May 1, 1849, in Center Township, Cedar County, Iowa. They had two children before Caroline died at about age 23. Their children were Ellen A. [married James Doak Nash], and Malona. Malona may have died as a youngster as she is last listed in the 1860 census, age 8 and is not listed in the 1870 census, though it is possible that she could have left home, married and was living elsewhere by 1870. Caroline died some time between 1852-1853.
About three years after Caroline's death, on April 22, 1855, John married Nancy Starr, daughter of James & Elizabeth Starr.
John and Nancy then had six more children:
Arius W. (aka A. W. or Charles)
Eugene (died at nine months)
James Wilbur (aka W. J.) (m. Ada (Eubank) Peck)
Edson A. (died at a year and a half)
Effie Adella (m. Robert Helvey)
John Franklin.
John fought in the Civil War with Co. A of the 24th Iowa Infantry (Union). He enlisted August 1, 1862 and mustered out April 20, 1865. He died Sept. 19, 1868. There is conflicting information about the location of his death. One family member (Janice Fleming) contends that he died in Black Hawk, Gilpin Co., Colorado. Another family member (Marjorie Ziemer) says that he died in LaGrande, Oregon. His burial location is unknown.
