William Root first arrived in Washington Co., Ohio with his brothers John, Jonathan, and Oliver ca. 1816-1820. Originally from Vermont, they spent several years in New York on their way to Ohio. William and his brothers were living in Decatur Twp., Washington Co. Ohio by November 1820.

William married Lucy Place December 20, 1821, in Washington Co. Ohio. A pioneer settler of Decatur Twp., he had a large farm located near where the Root Covered Bridge is today. He and Lucy had a large family, and several of his sons farmed in Decatur Twp., also. Their children were William Rufus, Thomas, Sidney, John, Lyman, Thaddeus, Hannah Root Bennett, and Mary Alvina Merrel. The area near William's farm became known as "Roottown." Son Lyman, and for a time, son Sidney, owned a gristmill at the site. Lucy Place Root died Sept. 1849 in Washington Co. William married a second time, in 1851, to Fanny Quinn of Wesley Twp. There were no children of this marriage. William died December 17, 1876, at the age of 82 yrs. in Washington County, of heart disease.

In 2013, William and Lucy Root were honored as pioneer settlers of Washington Co. in the First Families of Washington County, Washington Co. Chapter, Ohio Genealogical Society, having been nominated for that honor by great-great-great-grandchildren Robert Root and Deb Root Shell.

William Root was added as a pioneer settler to the Ohio Genealogical Society's First Families of Ohio lineage group in 2014 by Deb Root Shell, based on his 1820 and earlier residency in the state of Ohio.
