Robert was the son of Charles and Ann Leay Garnett. He was born in Bridlington, Yorkshire, England. He married Rebecca Ann Dennis on December 1, 1801 in Barmston, Yorkshire, England. He and his wife came to America with their daughter Jane Ann and her husband George McIntosh in 1846. They settled in the Dodgeville area.
