Sarah Ann Atherton died August 16, 1907, at her home in Pleasant Plains. She was of the most lovable and oldest residents of the Plains. Her thoughts were of the nobler things in life, and she gave up such for love, convenience and pleasure of others. Her charities were numerous. She was born in Mount Joy, Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Augustus Hayes. She came to Illinois when fourteen years old. Married Dr. Atherton on August 28th 1856, and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. She was a member of the Methodist Church - joined when she was young and had been an ardent Christian throughout her life. For twenty-five continuous years she taught the infant Bible class if the Pleasant Plains Methodist Church.
