TRAVERSE CITY — Laura (Bartz) Bernhart Somers, age 93, of Traverse City formerly of Bradenton, Fla., and Valparaiso, Ind., died on Sunday, Feb 21, 2010, at Munson Medical Center.
Laura was born on June 21, 1916, in Valparaiso, Ind., as the daughter of Asa and Ethel Bartz.
In 1939, she married Irvin Bernhart, who passed away on Feb. 18, 1999. Later that year, Laura married Carrol Somers who passed away on April 14, 2006.
Laura enjoyed playing Bridge and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Traverse City Senior Center and the Elks Club in Traverse City.
Laura is survived by four children, Janet (Stephen) Krieger of Traverse City, James (Linda) Bernhart of Fort Wayne, Ind., Carol (Michael) Barnard of Eau Claire and Phil (Deborah) Bernhart of Brighton; sister, Helen Jean Laforce Goulding of Burr Ridge, Ill.; grandchildren, Michael and Tammy Barnard, Robert Barnard, Christopher and Tina Butler, Jonathon Bernhart and Tammi Brantley, Jennifer Bernhart and Stephanie Clark; and great-grandchildren, Reid Butler, David Barnard, Reilly Butler, Ford Butler and Eve Bernhart.
Preceding Laura in death were her son, Frederick Charles Bernhart, M.D. in 1989; and her husbands, Irvin Bernhart and Carrol Somers.
A memorial service will be held on May 17, 2010, at Bartholomew Funeral Home, 102 Monroe Street, Valparaiso, IN 46383; (219) 462-4102. The time is yet to be determined.
