2004 Sep 1 Wed Dr. Viron Nelson Hukill, 84, of Petit Jean Mountain, formerly of Conway, died Monday (Aug. 30, 2004) in Little Rock. Dr. Hukill was born Feb. 11, 1920, at home near Russell, Okla., in Harmon County. He was educated in rural schools near his home and graduated from Centralvue High School in Russell, Okla. He received a bachelor and master of science degrees in industrial education from Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) in 1947 and 1948, and a doctor of education degree from the University of Missouri (Columbia) in 1958. Dr. Hukill was a Purple Heart World War II veteran, and served in the Army Air Corps beginning in 1942. In 1944 he was transferred into the infantry and sent into combat in the European Theater of Operation. In 1945 near Remagen, Germany, shortly after the battle for the bridge of Remagen (which crosses the Rhine River), he was wounded by a German "88" shell fragment. He spent seven months recovering in Army hospitals, after which he returned to complete his education and begin his teaching career. During his student years at OSU, he served as a student instructor and foreman of the production shop, managing a crew of craftsmen who made furniture for dormitories to accommodate the increasing number of veterans returning to college. He also made a special desk for the governor of Oklahoma. He moved to Conway in 1948 and began teaching industrial education at Arkansas State Teachers College, now the University of Central Arkansas, where he spent his entire career as a full professor until his retirement in 1983. Dr. Hukill served as chair of the department of industrial education from 1966 until 1982. He was faculty sponsor for the Association of Christian Students and the Craftsman's Guild, and an avid supporter of the UCA Bears. He served PDK throughout his teaching career at the state, regional and national levels. He was also a life member of the American Industrial Arts Association, the American Council on Industrial Arts Teacher Education, the American Council for Elementary School Industrial Arts, the National Association of Industrial Arts Educators, Iota Lambda Sigma Professional Industrial Education Fraternity and the Professional Picture Framers of America. He was an active member of the Conway Kiwanis Club and the First Baptist Church of Conway, and served both in many capacities.
