World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. During the First World War, he served as a Lance-Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, 4th Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Regiment. On September 12, 1918, he was in charge of the leading a section to locate German positions at junction post near Laventie, France. When his unit came under enemy machine-gun fire, he rushed to the nearest gun, bombing it and killing the gunner. He then attacked the next gun, destroying it and with another man captured a third gun position. Going forward, he single handedly captured a fourth gun and then returned to his platoon. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in May 1919.
