Adella was born in Sparta, Illinois to Armand Gleyre and Jane Dawson. She was still a child when her parents moved to Pueblo, Colorado. It was here that she met and married her husband, George Garfield Lehman.

George and Adella had four kids together and moved around a lot on account of George's railroad jobs. However, in the early 1920's, Adella decided she had had enough of constantly moving and wanted to put down roots. George chose his railroad jobs over family and the couple parted ways. George was never heard from again.

Adella and the kids packed up and moved to Los Angeles, California in 1925 with the rest of the Lehman clan. She cleaned houses and worked as a cook to make ends meet.

In 1949, Adella lost an eye to Glaucoma and her kids pulled their money together to buy her a glass eye. Sadly, however, the eye was lost two years later when Adella was struck by a car while walking across the street. She was so badly hurt that she wasn't expected to survive. But after a 5-week stay in the hospital, she was able to go home and lived with family while she recovered.

Adella died in 1959 from cancer. She left behind four children, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
