Pall Thorlaksson is called the Father of the Icelandic Settlement in North Dakota. Ordained a Lutheran minister after three years at Concordia Theological Seminary in St Louis, Missouri, Thorlaksson arrived in Wisconsin in 1872 where a small group of Icelanders had settled. He traveled to Manitoba to do missionary work and passed through the largely unoccupied Red River Valley area. The New Iceland (Gimli) community he visited on Lake Winnipeg which began in 1875 had experienced starvation and a small pox epidemic. Pall urged his fellow Icelanders to seek a better place to start life in the New World. He brought a group of Icelanders from New Iceland, Manitoba, Canada to Dakota Territory in Mar 1878.
