Charlotte was the daughter of Bartlett Luce and Sarah Janes, both from old New England families, who were early settlers of Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan. Her father Bartlett was a lumberman, owning vast acerages, and also managed the Black River Steam (lumber) mill.

Charlotte was the fourth of six children:

(4) Charlotte (Mrs. Lorenzo Mason) 1821 - 1885 buried Woodmere, Detroit
(5) Jane Catherine (Mrs. Thomas Scott Donahue)1825 - 1855 buried Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron, Michigan
(6) Charles Henry Luce 1830 - 1885 buried Logan Cemetery, Logan, Iowa

On Nov. 10th, 1838, in Canterbury, Connecticut, Charlotte married Lorenzo M. Mason, a man who was one of Michigan's pioneer "movers and shakers," serving in many civic and business capacities - a lawyer and banker, in St. Clair County and then Detroit.

Charlotte and Lorenzo were the parents of 5 children:
